IV Iron Infusion Therapy

Medically supervised iron infusions for adults with confirmed iron deficiency, for when oral iron isn’t the right fit.

At Captivate, IV iron therapy starts with a provider consultation and lab work, not guesswork. If your labs and history show that IV iron is appropriate, our medical team builds a plan around your own iron needs and gives your infusions in a calm, comfortable setting in Syracuse or Skaneateles.

What Is IV Iron Therapy?

An iron infusion delivers iron straight into the bloodstream through an IV, so it doesn’t depend on the digestive system to absorb it. Iron helps your body make hemoglobin, the protein red blood cells use to carry oxygen. When your iron stores run low, your body may have trouble keeping up.

For many people, oral iron supplements are the first step. Some people can’t tolerate them, don’t absorb them well, or need their iron stores rebuilt faster than pills can manage. In those cases, IV iron may be a more effective route.

Who Is a Candidate for IV Iron?

IV iron isn’t a general energy treatment, and it isn’t right for everyone. Your provider may consider it when oral iron isn’t appropriate, tolerated, or effective, or when faster iron repletion is clinically indicated. That can include:

  • Difficulty tolerating oral iron: Stomach upset, nausea, or constipation that makes daily supplements hard to keep taking
  • Absorption issues: Conditions or past procedures that limit how well the body absorbs iron from the gut
  • Ongoing iron losses: Situations where iron is lost faster than oral supplements can replace it
  • Other clinical circumstances: Cases where your provider decides faster repletion is medically appropriate

IV iron is not appropriate for people whose iron levels are normal or high, for anemia that isn’t caused by iron deficiency, or for anyone who has had a serious reaction to IV iron in the past. Your provider decides whether IV iron fits your situation based on your labs, health history, and a full clinical review.

Iron Deficiency Treatment Starts With Labs

Low iron can show up as tiredness, shortness of breath with activity, hair shedding, pale skin, cold hands and feet, or restless legs. These symptoms have many possible causes, and most of them have nothing to do with iron. Feeling tired doesn’t mean you need an iron infusion.

That’s why every IV iron plan at Captivate starts with bloodwork. Labs show whether iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia is actually present, and they guide your provider’s recommendation from there. Whether you’re looking for low iron treatment or a second opinion after oral iron hasn’t worked, testing comes first.

Your IV Iron Treatment Process

Step 1: Provider Consultation

A 30-minute visit to go over your symptoms, health history, current medications, and any past iron treatment.

Step 2: Required Lab Work

Before treatment, your provider will order or review:

  • CBC with differential
  • Ferritin
  • Serum iron and transferrin
  • Transferrin saturation
  • TIBC (total iron-binding capacity)

Step 3: A Personalized Treatment Plan

If IV iron is appropriate, your provider sets your dose and number of infusions based on your labs, medical history, and iron needs.

Step 4: Your Infusion

Infusions take place in-clinic with medical staff monitoring you throughout. Each Venofer dose runs about 15 minutes, followed by at least 30 minutes of observation before you leave.

Step 5: Follow-Up

Your provider may recheck your labs after treatment to see how your iron levels have responded and decide whether anything more is needed.

Venofer® (Iron Sucrose) Infusions

Captivate uses Venofer® (iron sucrose) for IV iron therapy. Venofer is given in doses of 100 to 200 mg, as a slow push over a few minutes or a short infusion, which is why most plans are a series of three to five visits rather than one long session. Your provider can adjust the plan as your treatment goes on.

Iron Infusion FAQs

An iron infusion delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through an IV, so it skips the digestive system. It’s used as an iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia treatment, especially when oral iron supplements aren’t well tolerated, aren’t absorbed well, or aren’t working fast enough.

IV iron may be considered for adults with lab-confirmed iron deficiency who have trouble tolerating oral iron, have absorption issues, have ongoing iron losses, or have other clinical reasons to rebuild iron more quickly. IV iron isn’t recommended for fatigue or low energy without a confirmed iron deficiency, which is why a consultation and labs always come first.

At Captivate, a single IV iron infusion is $400. Packages are available at 10% savings: three infusions for $1,080, four for $1,440, or five for $1,800. The 30-minute provider consultation is $50 and is billed separately. Required labs aren’t included in these prices.

It depends on your lab results, health history, and how much iron your body needs. Your provider will set your dose and number of treatments during your consultation. Many plans include a short series of infusions rather than just one.

Before IV iron therapy, Captivate requires a CBC with differential, ferritin, serum iron and transferrin, transferrin saturation, and TIBC. These tests confirm iron deficiency and help your provider set the right dose. Lab costs aren’t included in infusion pricing.

It depends on your prescribed dose. Plan for about an hour: getting settled, a Venofer dose that runs about 15 minutes, and at least 30 minutes of monitoring before you leave.

Most people tolerate IV iron well. Possible side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, muscle cramps, changes in blood pressure, or irritation at the IV site. Serious allergic reactions are rare. Our team reviews your history before treatment and monitors you during and after every infusion.
